Diet plays a very important part in PCOD patients to lose weight. A low GI diet is recommended
specially to maintain normal levels of insulin .most women suffering from PCODS are resistant to
insulin and as a result their pancreas secrete excessive insulin to regulate sugar levels in blood. As
insulin prevents fat burn insulin control is the best way to lose weight .
Symptoms of high levels of insulin
Weight gain
Facial hair
Pigmentation specially at neck and underarms
Skin tags
Abrupt hunger cravings
Irregular periods.
Many times these symptoms are commonly found in kids specially girls at the age of 10-12.
A well balanced diet along with 45 minutes of daily exercise can revert back the symptoms.
A high fibre low GI diet is the answer.
What to eat
Whole grains like brown rice/whole wheat flour
High proteins like kidney beans/chickpeas
Soybeans contain isoflavones, which are chemically similar to estrogens.
Seasonal green leafy vegetables
Healthy fats found in Nuts / seeds/cold pressed oils/and limited amounts of
fermented ghee.
Vitamin C in the form of limes/lemons/oranges
Seasonal fruits but not more than three in day
Foods to avoid
All high GI foods that have been processes to either remove its fibre or add any form of
sugar. In short eat foods in its natural form.
White rice or white breads
All sugary drinks like-Fruit juices/aerated drinks
The bad fats-trans fats or hydrogenated fats
All types of junk foods( even if they are claimed to be baked. it’s just a marketing
gimmick)
Excessive milk intake( due to the hormones injected to cattle)
Though weight loss is a big challenge for PCOD patients but not impossible. Long
term changes in diet along with regular exercising can give good results. But it’s very
important to keep any kind of stress at bay!
